One of the main reasons yoga has gained in popularity is its ability to help us deal with stress. Yoga is a personal journey and the best results are gained by making it intensely personal. Its best to keep track of your own practice and progress without making comparisons with others.
Comparing yourself to others is a fruitless activity because none of us start on a level playing field. Your body absorbs and stores in the muscles all the experiences in your life. This is a good thing since for many of us experiencing difficult emotions again and again would mean that we could not function. Some of the experiences we store in muscle give us respite but there will probably come a time in life when we need relief.
Yoga stretches are a way of releasing old memories in muscles and laying downfresh ones, this is how yoga relieves stress and supports wellness. You will come upon people in a yoga class who have a different kind of muscle memory. In their lives they may have been involved in different sports and activities including gymnastics or dancing. This will have created a memory in terms of movement which they will have immediate access to when they come to class.
Alongside muscle memory the influence of another students psychology and emotional life will have been different to yours. Add to this the structure and natural proportions of each body and the cult of comparison and competition looks more and more hopeless and distressing.
Being stiff is not a curse, very flexible people find it a challenge to keep everything together both mentally, physically and emotionally. Stiff people in fact are very together and just need some support to loosen up a bit.
Yoga encourages you to reconnect with your own true self. Yoga philosophy presupposes that we all have the capacity within ourselves to be happy and express the very best of ourselves to the world. Notice how you feel after just one class and you will feel a positive state awakening within you. Intensly seek this positive and nourishing state and the idea of competition and comparison will fall away.
